Its molecule contains a reactive carbon-carbon double bond, making it prone to free-radical polymerization or copolymerization to form high polymers. The primary use of MMA is in bulk polymerization to produce polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), commonly known as plexiglass or acrylic. This material offers excellent optical transparency, weather resistance, and mechanical strength, widely used in automotive lamp covers, optical lenses, advertising signs, sanitary ware, architectural glazing, and more.
